Class in Session

This picture is a classroom of first graders in Alabama not unlike Scout's class. You can really see the poorness of the children since none of them are wearing shoes. I wonder whether the children would miss school so they could work to feed them and their families. If you remeber in To Kill a Mockingbird, Walter Cunningham was as old as Jem, but was in Scout's class, because he left school in the summer to help his dad with the chores. I felt really sympathetic towards Walter. I wonder if he would succeed if he ever got past the first grade. What do you think about Walter?

It is really sad that back then they had to drop out of school just so that they could take care of their families. I feel really bad for kids like Walter, even though school can sometimes be stressfull.

i think walter has a chance to succeed in life. he should be given the same chance as everyone even though he has to work to help his family make a living.
