I know that I have posted a few times about My Sister's Keeper. I have told you a brief summary of what I have read and situations going on in the book. Now you will hear about the controversial side of this book and the research behind it. The parents of Anna, Brian and Sara Fitzgerald had a genetically made baby. She struggles through this throughout the whole book. Whether her parents really love her or if she is just someone who is there for when her sister, Kate, gets sick again.
The main controversy in this book is that Anna was made specifically to help her sister. Her parents made sure to put the right DNA in her in order to give her sister the medical help she needed. Anna goes to a lawyer in order to get control of her body back.
This would be a tragic thing if you knew you had to keep being there and giving your bone marrow or cells to your sister everytime she got sick. I did research to find out more about genetically altered babies. It seems that most of them have come out healthy. They have shown by taking fingerprints that there is some DNA in the child that did not come from either of its parents. Most of these studies were used on mothers who were infertile. I guess this is sort of like the book. Except that this usage is for a mother who can not make her own babies, and the book is about making a baby to be genetically like its sister.
Another use I found that people use for genetic altered babies is to make them healthier. One article said that in making babies genetically they couldn't inherite genetically transmitted diseases. How cool is that.
Although I do not find all of this very ethical. I don't think that people should be able to mess with a persons DNA in or to make them "superhuman" or something like that. These articles were the closest thing I could come to that related to making someone to benefit someone else. I hope that this has opened your eyes to what genetics can do.
I really do recommend this book though. It is full of insight and other problems that you can relate to besides the fact of having your body controled for something you don't want messed with.
