A sunrise lasts but a few minutes...

In one of the books I've been reading by R.A. Salvatore (he's my favorite author), he says in a thoughtful passage (or rather, one of his characters says): "...We need to be reminded sometimes that a sunrise lasts but a few minutes. But its beauty can burn in our hearts eternally."

The main character keeps a journal/diary thing, and it's kind of like where R.A. Salvatore reflects on things that are both going on in the story, and just things in life in general. There's around 5 "parts" or splits to each book, and inbetween each split is a journal passage. Some really thoughtful things can come out of them, such as the line above.

"We need to be reminded sometimes that a sunrise lasts but a few minutes. But its beauty can burn in our hearts eternally."

This is really a powerful line if you can think about it. It can mean a lot of things. The main point the author is trying to get across in this case, though, is that even though something may not last forever, the experience of having it will.

To me, that's a very powerful passage. The main point of the passage is that elves live so much longer than humans, so most elves think that they should try to avoid humans, especially marriage to them. The main character writes that he thinks otherwise though, and that even though their spouse may die in 50 years and they live on for 600 more, the experience of that 50 years will always be there inside. However, it applies not only to the story, but also to real life.

Instead of worrying all the time about things, the author tries to say that our lives are short, and that we can only fit so much into them. Instead of worrying and living a meek life, we should try to fit as much as we can into our life while we still can, because we might regret it someday.

Here is a link to R.A. Salvatore's website, specifically all the books he has written. I have read most of his books, and they are all masterfully thought out and really bring to life the characters and also many ideas and philosophies you may not have even thought of, or about. I would recommend most of his books.

Of the books/trilogies on that link, I have read: The Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Dark Elf Trilogy, Drizzt & Company, Paths of Darkness, The Hunter's Blades. All of those trilogies have the same main characters pretty much, but he writes them so well that they are all excellent. Instead of seeming like it just keeps running on, it seems like a whole new story altogether.

I have also read the Cleric Quintet series, but it is a 5 book series about a different set of characters. The characters in this series do eventually meet up with the characters in other series briefly, but this series is still an awesome stand-alone trilogy.

What do you guys think about the phrase I used earlier from the passage?

I really like that passage and I really agree with your interpretation of it. This may be a bad example but it's like: a wedding only lasts a day but its purpose and memory lasts for an eternity. Good post and good job!!
You are a great blogger.

I think that's a mighty fine example. There's lots of examples that could be put with the phrase; that's one of the reasons that it's so powerful.

that's such a cool quote. There's so many events in your life that you could put into that phrase. I love it.
