I'm not sure Mayella knows her story. She's a big baby, although, her father isn't much better. It seemed to me they were whining about things that were trivial. If they didn't have anything to hide, why would they be so uptight? I can understand nerves, but there's a difference between nerves and outright attention seeker. What was up with Mayella saying Atticus was making fun of her because he called her "Miss" and "Ma'am"? Mayella is just being a baby who wants more attention than she's getting.
Ok, did anyone else notice how Tom's and Mayella's were as different as dark and light? They told two different stories. Frankly, I think Tom's story is more believable. Mayella has never had a man who loved her, so (this is what I gathered out of the situation) she figured she could force an African-American (is there a "-" or not?) to love her. Besides, why would an African-American, in those times, do that to a white woman? That would be just flat-out stupid. That would be a life and death mistake.
I have to wonder if Mayella and her father know their own story. Ok, taking a shot in the dark, here, but could the reason they didn't call for a doctor be because Mayella's father beat her?

I agree with you, but I think the reason other than wanting attention for the whole miss ma'am, thing was because she actually thought he was making fun of her, probably because she isn't used to any respecct whatsoever. but yeah, i agree with your stab in the dark completely. That's what I thought too, but what i don't understand is where the sheriff is in the whole thing? like i know that the dad supposedly got him as fast as he could but wouldn't he realize that the dad did it to mayella? Especially after him not having a functioning left arm. I just don't understanad his(sheriff) role in the whole thing.
Bribery? Maybe her father bribed him with something if he wouldn't talk? Is the sheriff married? If he isn't, here's a thought. Mr. Ewell used Mayella as compensation for the sheriff lying? Don't know. The sherrif said her strangle marks went ALL THE WAY around her throat, so wouldn't that start light bulb saying, "Tom Robinson, one arm, strangle marks all the way around Mayella's neck, not guilty!"?
I think that is the exact reason they didn't call a doctor. Mr. Ewell had to have beaten her. I agree with you one hundred percent. Tom's story is much more believeable and Mayella just seems a litle stuck up. She is acting just like a baby and trying to make people feel sorry for her. It must be hard for Atticus to talk to her because of the way she is acting. He seems so cool and patient. I am sure that I would just flip out on her but he just acts as if everything is going to be ok. It is annoying too on how Mayella thinks Atticus is making fun of her for calling her ma'am and Miss. It is plain annoying. You are totally right on these topics.
Yay, I'm not the only one who thinks she is completely and totally obnoxious!!!! Mayella's a nut case!!! I'm afraid had I been anyone in that court room, I'd have flipped out and told her to stop her bawling, she was being a big baby, and to get the feelings off the end of her nose!!! (Which probably would've gotten me kicked out!)
