"One Child's Will to Survive"

Right now, I am reading a book titled A Child Called "It". This book is about a one of the most severe cases of child abuse in Califorian history. It is an autobiographry by Dave Pelzer who was brutally breaten and totured by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. He no longer is considered part of the family but more of a slave, and no longer a boy but an "it". He lives like an animal and has to scavage for food just to survive. This book made me realize how lucky I am to have the family that I do. They love me unconditionally and treat me as a human being. I could not imagine having a mother that tried to literally torture and even kill me. How would you cope with a parent similar to Dave's mother? I would have to say that I would try to talk to a teacher or some other adult that I trusted and pray to God that they would help me. However, this is easier said than done. Dave went through years of abuse before he was finally rescued by a group of teachers that cared about him. What are some people in your life that you know love you and care about you? After reading this book I think you would be able to answer this question easily because the story makes you realize how fortunate we are to have the families that we do. http://www.davepelzer.com This is a link that will take you an offical website of Dave Pelzer. It is filled with information and wonderful photos that help you get to know the author of this amazing book.

You make a good point, we take for granted the people in our lives. We dont really think about what would happen if we had to live life like that. Having to search for food in your own house and have a mother who would just abuse us. It is horriable to think about that.

I was told that this book was really sad. I do not think that I could read something like that.

I read this book about a year ago, and like you it also made me realize how often I take for granted the people in my life. It was shocking to me that someone could go home everyday knowing the fate that awaited him. I was confused why he did not try to run. Maybe it was out of the sheer fear of being caught and abused more. What do you think?
