Ray of Sunshine in Pants

"I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't supposed to be doing things that required pants. Aunt Alexandra's vision of my deportment involved playing with small stoves, tea sets, and wearing the Add-A-Pearl necklace she gave me when I was born; furthermore, I should be a ray of sunshine in my father's lonely life. I suggested that one could be a ray of sunshine in pants just as well." This is my favorite paragraph of the book so far. The way Scout suggests that she could be a ray of sunshine in pants to her snooty aunt is so funny. I used to be a huge tomboy, and while I have changed my look, I still am one at heart. It always drove me nuts when people would comment on my appearance and the way I acted, because I was not much of a young lady. This is part of the reason that I like this book so much, (so far) because I can relate to Scout, and I admire her spirit, not to mention she always makes me laugh. Why is it that everyone has an image that they must live up to. I bet half of the people in this class thought I was a boy because my screen name was cardinalsfan right. Anyway I don't think that a girl should have to act like a girl if she doesn't want to, because what is the definition of acting girlish anyways! Everyone is different and just like Scout I don't think that people should stereo type. I would still much rather wear a pair of basketball shorts than a skirt any day!

Excellent post. Your screen name threw me off a little, but I didn't know any girls in the class were really big cardinal fans. But hey, that's cool. :] I love that paragraph too. I'm not the girly girl either. Actually, I never am or have been. One of the big sterotypes that I've noticed this year is that you have to be a guy to be in drumline and that is one of the big hurdles I've faced recently. It is a male dominated music group both at Kickapoo and at compititions, so in a sense being "lady like" can be near impossibe. But then again, what is defined as being lady like anyway? My whole theory on that is that if you're happy with who you are, than who cares how you're acting. If you're not harming anyone else, then it's okay. :] This is a really good post. I might try to post a little on this topic too.

oh my gosh i did think you were a boy at first! thats a really great way to throw someone off. I agree that we shouldent have to act like girls all the time. And i agree with the skirt thing too.

Wow I really like your ideas am so glad that there are still some people left who do not care about what others think about them. I think that as long as you are happy with who you are than it should be acceptable to other people. Sometimes it is fun to dress up like a girl just because it can make you feel pretty, but it is also sometimes nice to dress down and not look great. I also think that we should not be expected to act like girls all of the time because that would get really old!!!

Wow, cardinalsfan, I never really thought of you as a tomboy. I have to agree with Eliza, it's good to know there are peole who don't care what people think. I don't really care until I get in front of people, then I flip!!!!
