Mercutio in the Modernized Shakespeare

In the modernized Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio dresses up like a woman for the masquerade party, and the movie seems to empathize that part of the movie for quite some time, although I don't understand why.

Can anyone discover the meaning of this part they implemented in the movie?

The only explanation I can think of is that it kind of reflects Romeo's madness and infatuation with Juliet, just in a different light.

The ecstasy part is also kind of out of place. Although it could help show a different perspective, I don't quite understand why they would put that part in there.
